Background of the study
Solid waste disposal has emerged as a critical environmental and public health challenge in rapidly growing urban centers like Uyo. The improper management of municipal waste poses significant risks to environmental health, contributing to soil, water, and air pollution (Etim, 2023). With urban populations increasing and industrial activities expanding, Uyo faces mounting challenges in maintaining proper waste management systems. Inefficient collection methods and inadequate recycling infrastructure exacerbate environmental hazards, affecting both human health and ecosystem balance (Udofia, 2024). Research indicates that communities with robust waste management practices experience lower rates of disease and environmental degradation (Etim, 2023). This study aims to critically examine current waste disposal practices, analyze their impact on public health, and propose sustainable alternatives. Moreover, the research will explore community awareness, government policies, and the implementation of environmental health standards in the local context (Udofia, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Uyo Local Government Area is facing severe environmental and public health challenges due to ineffective solid waste disposal practices. Inadequate infrastructure, limited public awareness, and poor policy enforcement contribute to the proliferation of environmental pollutants. This situation increases the risk of waterborne diseases, respiratory issues, and ecosystem damage. The lack of integrated waste management systems calls for a comprehensive study to understand the underlying causes and to propose sustainable solutions. This research seeks to address the gaps in policy implementation and community engagement, highlighting the need for immediate intervention to protect environmental health (Etim, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate current solid waste disposal practices in Uyo.
To assess the impact of waste management on environmental health.
To propose sustainable waste management strategies.
Research questions:
What are the prevailing waste disposal practices in Uyo?
How do these practices affect environmental health?
What sustainable measures can improve waste management efficiency?
Research Hypotheses:
Inadequate waste disposal practices are linked to deteriorating environmental health in Uyo.
Increased public awareness correlates with improved waste management.
Sustainable waste management practices can significantly reduce environmental pollution.
Significance of the study
The study will provide essential insights into the relationship between waste disposal practices and environmental health, offering guidance for policy makers and environmental managers. The recommendations aim to enhance community health and promote sustainable urban waste management strategies, fostering improved quality of life in Uyo (Udofia, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining solid waste disposal practices and their impact on environmental health within Uyo Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Solid Waste: Non-liquid waste materials discarded by households or industries.
Environmental Health: The aspects of human health determined by physical, chemical, and biological factors in the environment.
Sustainable Alternatives: Long-term, eco-friendly methods that reduce negative environmental impacts.
